How much does it cost to live in Austria: prices for transport, real estate and food

Austria is a very liveable city. In addition, Vienna consistently ranks high in the world rankings of cities suitable for living. Prices for services and goods are among the lowest in the EU.

With good wages and health insurance, practically free higher education, low unemployment, and cheap food, the country is very attractive to foreigners.

Accommodation

For natives, owning your own property is a dream. The reason is the high price of flats and houses. A nest in new building costs between 2,000 and 3,000 euros per square meter. For this reason, renting is mainstream, and Austrians themselves often change jobs to make a decent living.

The search for the perfect flat can take up to six months. A good flat costs between 800 and 1,500 euros per month. For an average salary of €3500, this figure is affordable. Students rent in groups and pay €300-600 per person.

For those who have lived there for more than 3 years, the conditions will be milder and the price will be cheaper. Nevertheless, foreigners should be prepared for living expenses of about 500-700 € per month.

Transport

A bus pass in Vienna costs €33 per month and €365 per year, and there are good discounts for students. Also popular in the capital are bicycles and there are plenty of bike lanes.

Health insurance

Health insurance is compulsory in Austria, so you can't refuse it.

Nutrition

There are a number of chain shops in Austria, Penny Markt, and Hofer, where you can buy the products you need at a reasonable price.

The Brunnenmarkt is a popular market for visitors, where you can buy fruit and vegetables inexpensively.

In most cases, you will need to spend around €250 per month just on food.

Entertainment

Vienna often hosts various shows and film festivals. There are dozens of museums and galleries in the city. Ticket prices are relatively modest. Entrance to a gallery is 7-8 euros. Film screenings are €6-7 on weekdays and a little more expensive at the weekend.

Ticket prices for theatre, opera, and ballet vary, depending on the venue and the program (around €30-35).

Studying

If you would like to take a preparatory course and learn German, you will need to buy teaching aids. One set costs 100 euros. However, there are always former students who sell books at a significant discount. In Austria, there are many language courses that can help foreigners to get accustomed to the new country quicker and cost about 200-450 euros per month.

To summarize

If you doubt whether you should move to Austria, take your time. Everything in this country is very expensive, but this is the price for peace of mind and stability.

As in many countries, the minimum wage in Austria is sufficient for a comfortable life. Because of the ease of travel within the EU, many Austrians visit neighbouring countries for leisure and shopping.

Approximate household expenses per month for visitors: €2,000 to €3,000.
