Selfies are an extremely popular way to take pictures of yourself while on vacation. Snapping a quick photo with your smartphone's front camera is a great way to keep memories of your trip.

However, certain tourist locations in various parts of the world have banned their visitors from taking selfies, often for the safety of those taking the photos. Between January 2008 and July 2021, an estimated 379 people died in selfie-related accidents.

ParrotPrint photography experts have created a ranking of places in the world where it is forbidden to take selfies and where you can even receive a significant fine for taking a photo.

Selfie with "big cats" in New York

In 2014, New York City passed a law banning selfies with any "big cats." Regardless of whether you are in a zoo, a carnival or a circus, photos with tigers, lions or other predatory cats are prohibited.

Jewel House, Tower of London

At the Jewel House in the Tower of London, visitors can enjoy the precious jewels of the royal family. However, they are kept under strict security, more than 100 video surveillance cameras are installed here and employees are on duty 24 hours a day. Photo and video shooting inside the museum is prohibited, because it is considered a risk to the safety of the exhibits.

Garup Beach, France

In 2014, Garup beach authorities banned visitors from taking photos during high season holidays. The ban was put in place to prevent people from bragging about their parties. They even have "holiday spam police" to keep an eye on tourists.

Garoupe Beach is the most glamorous and cleanest in France, so the management wants people to be able to enjoy the exclusive beach right now, without spending most of their time taking photos.

The Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia

The country's authorities have banned taking photos during the pilgrimage, as it is considered disrespectful, as people here are making a holy journey and an act of worship.

Enciero, Spain

Every year in the city of Pamplona, Enciero (Running of the Bulls) is held - a race with bulls. To prevent people from putting their lives in danger for the sake of selfies, participants were forbidden to hold video devices in their hands and everyone was forbidden to take pictures. The rules are so strict that if you are found to be breaking them, you can be detained, arrested or fined more than €3,000.

Western Railway, Japan

The West Japan Railway Company has banned people from taking selfies with selfie sticks. The law was introduced in 2015 to protect visitors from bumping into power lines, which can cause electrocution, and to prevent people from falling onto the tracks during a photo shoot.

Photo with a bear, California

Tourists are not allowed to take selfies at Toha Lake, as there is a risk of encountering wild animals, including a bear.

Many tourist locations prohibit tourists from taking photos. This rule is especially characteristic of museums or galleries, so as not to interfere with other visitors' enjoyment of art and not to violate their rights. Therefore, we advise travelers to be more careful and follow the rules of photography during the trip.
