The healthcare system in Luxembourg: medical care and insurance

Healthcare in Luxembourg is based on two main principles: compulsory health insurance and free choice of medical services for patients. Medical services in Luxembourg are of a very high standard and include private medical offices, medical centers and hospitals, hospitals, patient care services, pharmacies, assistance, care facilities, and home services. All doctor's surgeries are privately run. Hospitals and hospitals are public institutions.

How do I get medical care in Luxembourg

In Luxembourg, all residents have access to public healthcare. Employees and the self-employed are required to pay social security contributions to receive health care services. If you are employed, your health insurance contribution will automatically be deducted from your salary by your employer. In addition, all dependents are insured through employees who pay social security contributions. Children can get insurance from their parents and students up to the age of 27. Those who have no income or are unable to make contributions due to low income may receive basic health care paid for by the state.

To apply, you will need to contact your local social security office. Persons temporarily staying in Luxembourg from EU/EEA/Switzerland can receive health care via the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Visitors from non-EU countries must have private health insurance in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg health insurance

Your social security card is proof of your Luxembourg health insurance. This card must be presented each time you use a health service. In the Luxembourg health insurance system, all citizens have the right to choose their doctors, specialists, and hospitals.

While 99% of the population has access to public health care, about 75% have private health insurance.

Required Documents

The form must be accompanied by:

- A copy of a valid ID, such as a passport; Proof of employment;

- Proof of residency status;

- A certificate of entitlement to benefits.

The CCSS will review the application and send the social security card to the residence address in about three weeks. The Luxembourg Social Security Card (Carte de Sécurité Sociale) should always be carried with you.

For example, the card must be presented at doctor's appointments, medical examinations, and visits to pharmacies, as well as when buying prescription drugs.

The European Health Insurance Card is valid for medical care in any European Union country.

Health insurance costs and refunds

In Luxembourg, patients pay for medical services themselves and receive reimbursement by submitting receipts for medical examinations, treatment, and medication. The receipt must be sent to the CNS to receive reimbursement. Under the official system, this procedure takes about 3 weeks and is transferred directly to the patient's bank account. Doctors usually inform patients about the percentage of the payment for medical services. The Caisse de Maladie, a division of the National Health Fund, determines the cost of treatment and reimbursement for the patient.
