The best time to travel to Uruguay — particularly to its coastal areas — is during its summer months between November and February, with many of the beach resorts effectively closing for much of the year as soon as summer slips into autumn. However, travel is possible year-round; especially if focusing on more cultural sites and cities.

- Alcohol and cigarettes. There are some restrictions on the import of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes produced in MERCOSUR member countries and purchased in Duty-Free shops: no more than two liters of drinks and four packs of cigarettes.

- Private things. Accompanying baggage containing clothing and personal items may be imported duty-free.

- Printed literature. You can import books, magazines, and newspapers duty-free.

- Currency. Import and export of foreign currency are not limited. There is no currency control.

Prohibited for import and export:

- plants, their parts, and products of plant origin;

- fresh fruits and vegetables;

- seed;

- crafts with seeds and plant products;

- flowers, decorative plants and grown in a test tube;

- soils, as well as various planting materials;

- animals and products of animal origin;

- skins and stuffed animals and birds;

- milk in liquid form, oil, eggs, cream, and cheese;

- poultry, including exotic breeds, bees, etc.;

- meat and sausage products of all kinds;

- animal feed and biological or veterinary products;

- combustible substances; radioactive materials;

- alkaloids;

- products that contain drugs;

- materials containing obscenity propaganda, pornography, and materials subverting the state system.
